Student Support

Programs for Students with Documented Disabilities

SBS Learning Support: Learning Support is for students with documented disabilities that impact learning.  This program provides intensive academic assistance tailored to the individual needs of the student. Considering the student’s unique learning profile, we offer cross-curricular support to improve the student’s ability to implement strategies and manage his/her academics independently. The student will develop skills in areas of identified need, such as:  organization, time management, study skills, test-taking, reading comprehension, writing, learning, self-advocacy, and learning difference awareness. This is not a Special Education program. Learning Support is contracted with parents, and there is a fee.

3 Village School District Support: The local school district provides various services/Special Education to qualified students. An IEP is needed.  Resource, speech therapy, and counseling, are provided in our building if mandated in the IEP.  Parents must contact the district to request services, and provide them with an existing IEP by JUNE 1, of the prior school year.  There are no fees for the district services. Contact information: Office of Pupil Personnel, 3 Village School District,  631-730-4036

Programs for any Student Needing Support
Comprehensive Support: Comprehensive Support is a per-semester program offered to students who benefit from extra assistance outside the classroom to develop skills and strategies for academic success.  The support is customized to the student’s needs.  We provide academic support and/or support with executive functioning.  Specific subject-based tutoring and ESL support are also available.  Parents contract with us for this program. There is a per-semester fee. This is not a Special Education program.

A.C.E The Course! (Academic Coaching for Excellence): A.C.E. The Course! is offered to high-achieving students who seek to maximize their learning potential. This 5-session program will teach students how to implement effective and efficient learning strategies in all of their courses.

Academic Accommodations and Formal Education Plans

All students at The Stony Brook School are capable of meeting the rigorous demands of the curriculum. Some students with disabilities may need academic accommodations to allow equal access to the curriculum. To submit a request for accommodations, families must provide a full evaluation report and, if applicable, copies of an IEP or 504 plan to the Director of Learning Services.

The Stony Brook School follows the College Board’s standards for documentation, which include the following seven criteria:

  1. The diagnosis is clearly stated.
  2. Information is current.
  3. Educational, developmental, and medical history is presented.
  4. The diagnosis is supported.
  5. The functional limitation is described.
  6. Recommended accommodations are justified.
  7. Evaluators’ professional credentials are established.

Please refer to the College Board website for further information regarding documentation requirements.

A Formal Education Plan (FEP) is created for students with documented disabilities and is shared with the student’s teachers and other relevant adults, such as dorm parents and coaches. The FEP includes the evaluation date, evaluator name, disability, strengths, weaknesses, and approved accommodations. The FEP also documents accommodations for the College Board and ACT. Students with disabilities are eligible for Learning Support if they need additional learning assistance beyond accommodations.
