Stony Brook School students competed in the Long Island Regional High School Ethics Bowl competition. Out of the two teams competing, one was able to take home the trophy after a tense semi-final and final round.
By McKenzie Taylor, Ethics Bowl Coach
The hard work that Josh Kim ’26, Sisi Zhang ’26, and Nika Shi ’26 have put in the last couple of months really showed in the final two rounds. They presented extremely well articulated, thoughtful and moving arguments. Discussion topics ranged from questions like whether or not it is ethical to vote third party in particularly contentious presidential elections, to how much influence parents ought to have on their children’s extracurricular activities.
I was particularly proud of their argument in the final round of the competition. After a long, grueling day that began at 8am, it would have been easy for Josh, Nika, and SIsi to begin to falter. However, they showed renewed resolve and presented not only a thought provoking and effective argument, but one that was also incredibly inspirational and heart warming.
In the end, Stony Brook won by just one point!
The season is not done yet. In order to make it on to the National competition at UNC Chapel Hill, Josh, Sisi, and Nika will have to prove themselves once more at the Northeast Divisional Competition on February 15th.
