Brookers Excel in the American Mathematics Competitions

SBS students recently participated in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), a series of mathematical contests organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). One part of this competition is the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), which serves as the second stage to identify top mathematical talent for the United States team at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Every year, about 40 of the top SBS math students take the test; the following students qualified for the AIME, placing among the top 2.5% of all AMC participants:

  • Sanchuan Feng ’27
  • Chanwoo ‘Joseph’ Jung ’26
  • Jade Kim ’26
  • Zhanhong ‘Jeff’ Liu ’28
  • Jack Lu ’27
  • Sunny Tang ’27
  • Junlin ‘Lina’ Wang ’27
  • Litong ‘Tony’ Xing ’27
  • Kairui ‘Carrey’ Yang ’26
  • Hanlin ‘Eileen’ Yao ’27

Out of more than 300,000 students who participate in the AMC, only a few advance to the third tier —the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO).

Out of the 10 students, Joseph Jung ’26 and Sanchuan Feng ’27 qualified for the USAMO, while Lina Wang ’27 qualified for the USAJMO. Their achievement places them among the top 225 math students in the country!

On this amazing accomplishment, Math Department Head Steve Stortz, said:

“We had three qualifiers for the USAMO this year. To put that into perspective, in the 18 years I have been proctoring the AMC and AIME, I may have had two previous qualifiers in total.”

To further contextualize the accomplishment, fewer than 5% of participating schools nationwide produce even one qualifier, and multiple qualifiers typically only occur at specialized math/science magnet schools, and each qualifier represents approximately the top 0.075% of mathematical talent in their age group - having three at one institution defies statistical probability especially for a non-specialized school like SBS.

SBS offers six courses beyond AP Calculus BC and enroll 65+ students in those courses each year.

Congratulations to our students and faculty on this outstanding achievement. Their success is a testament to The Stony Brook School’s mathematical curriculum and its ongoing pursuit to be the #1 school in the country for mathematics.
