OUR MISSION

SINCE 1922

Character Before Career,” articulates a principle that sets us apart. While we pursue academic excellence, admission to prestigious colleges and universities, and preparation for meaningful and profitable careers, our chief concern is for the moral, intellectual, and spiritual growth of our students.

We focus on the traditional core virtues of love, hope, faith, wisdom, justice, temperance, and courage. Meanwhile we help students identify and resist the capital vices: pride, vainglory, envy, wrath, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust. While many are committed to the ideals of character education, very few intentionally design a school to cultivate moral and intellectual virtue. At Stony Brook, character education permeates every aspect of school life.

ASK A GRADUATE

“What is your purpose in life?”
“How are you going to impact the world?”
“Who is God?”
“What is He like?”
“What is the good life?”

Unlike many schools, we’re not afraid to ask these questions and give students space and opportunity to wrestle with them. We look for our students to develop their own answers to these questions, because those answers will organize how they live the rest of their lives.

Our students aren’t just coming to school; they’re coming to a home away from home. Because we’re a boarding school, each of our teachers lives either in a dorm or in a house surrounding our 55-acre campus.

This arrangement means that teaching here is more than just a job; it truly is a way of life.

As a Christian institution, we believe our diverse community of students deserves to reap every benefit of a Stony Brook education no matter where they stand socioeconomically. Our office is committed to making SBS the right fit for your family.
